An important precautionary measure

Deactivate your electric garage door opener every three (3) months by unplugging it.  Operate the door manually in order to determine how easy it is to open.  Remember that an electric garage door opener is only meant to work as a substitute for human strength.  You must therefore avoid placing any unnecessary strain on it.  If the door is hard to open when operated manually, get in touch with a Dominator Dealer.  This sort of problem may result from a decompressed spring, a warped track, or a loose cable.  If so equipped, it is a good idea to check the photoelectric protection system as well to make sure it is working properly.

Q. Should I use a professional installer?

A. At Kinetic Access, we firmly believe that the installation of a garage door is not a do-it-yourself job. A garage door is the largest moving object in your home and because of the large number of small parts, its installation is highly technical. Connecting the springs can be particularly dangerous and proper installation is critical to the performance of your door. One of the other services a professional installer can provide is the disposal of your old door, if you are replacing it. Professional installers can typically install a door in a few hours and are careful to make sure safety requirements are met. Installations by most homeowners typically span several days and cause much frustration. In addition, incorrect installation can void certain warranties, so we recommend a professional handle the job for you.

Q. I want to replace my garage door, but I don’t know how to dispose of my old one. Will Kinetic Access take care of that?

A. Yes! Most dealers will haul your old door away after the new door is installed for a small additional fee. Discuss this with us when you get your estimate for your new door.

Q. Are all door sizes available?

A. Yes. Kinetic Access makes residential doors in widths beginning at 2000mm up to 6600mm. We can make any width in between, in five-millimetre increments. (Please note – not all models are available in all sizes).

Q. Do I need a lock on my garage door?

A. If an electric garage door opener has been installed on your door, it may not be necessary to have a lock. Newer electric openers function as the lock, making it unlikely that an intruder would be able to lift your door from the outside. If you have an older opener, check to see if your door can be lifted from the outside. We do not recommend that you install a lock with an opener, because someone may accidentally try to automatically open the door when it is physically locked, causing possible damage. You should consider a lock if you do not intend to have an automatic opener.

Q. Should I Insulate my Garage Door?

A. The large amount of publicity around the ENERGYWISE™ funding to install insulation and/or heating in homes and continuing weather extremes has made insulation a front-of-mind topic for many homeowners.

So you may be wondering about the benefits of insulating your garage door.

There are definitely positive results to be had, but they will vary depending on your particular situation – let us explain;

EXISTING HOMES

Existing homes will tend to have existing garage doors – no surprises there, but the type of door may impact how you go about insulating your garage.

If you have an old Tilt door, you may not have enough room to be able to replace it with an insulated sectional door, but you could fit one of our new Flex-A-Door’s, which at the very least, will cut down on the drafts inherent with tilting doors.

Having an existing sectional door can make the process of insulating your garage far simpler and give you two options to consider: Work with the door you have or upgrade it completely.

Working with your existing door, you could look at adding after-market insulation to the back of it. This will generally give ok results, but a word of warning, the additional weight of the insulation will mean your door will require new springs to operate correctly.

As a result, the newly insulated door will need to be weighed and new springs ordered to suit. This is best left to us, as replacing and adjusting springs on any garage door can be extremely dangerous, especially to those who have not been trained in the correct procedure.

Note: An automated door may appear to continue to operate correctly; however, the life of the opener will be severely reduced due to the additional strain it will now be under, and the safety reverse systems may fail to work as expected.

Doom and gloom aside, if you choose to take this option, make sure you know the entire cost upfront, and please make sure the work is carried out by a professional.

NEW HOMES

When designing your new home, there is plenty to think about when trying to create an energy-efficient one. But that doesn’t mean that you should gloss over your garage door, as it is probably one of the largest openings in your home and most prone to heat transfer.

Double-glazed windows are now a standard requirement as they are far more efficient at reducing heat transfer by creating a Thermal Break between the two sheets of glass. So it is easy to see that single and double-glazed windows are at opposite ends of the spectrum.
