Is Your Gate Ready for Winter?

Here’s What to Check Before the Cold Hits

Winter in New Zealand does not get enough credit for the damage it causes to outdoor hardware. From Christchurch frosts to Auckland’s wet, grey stretches, the season is harder on your gate than you might think. Hinges seize up. Timber swells. Automated motors struggle in the cold. And by the time you notice something is wrong, the repair bill is usually bigger than it needed to be.

A bit of attention now saves you a lot of hassle later.

Why Winter Is Hard on Gates

Gates cop it from multiple directions over winter. Temperature drops cause metal to contract, putting stress on joints and welds. Rain and moisture work into any rust-prone areas. And if your gate is automated, cold temperatures can affect battery performance and motor responsiveness.

Neglecting basic maintenance going into winter is one of the most common reasons homeowners end up needing a full gate replacement sooner than expected.

What to Check Before Winter Sets In

Work through this list before the worst of the cold weather arrives.

  • Hinges and fasteners. Check for rust, stiffness, or movement. Hinges that grind or squeak in summer will only get worse once temperatures drop. Tighten any loose bolts while you are at it.
  • Gate alignment. A gate that sits slightly off-square will strain whatever is holding it. Cold weather makes misalignment worse, especially on heavier double swing gates.
  • Timber components. If your gate or any part of the frame is timber, check for cracking, swelling, or paint failure. Exposed timber absorbs moisture fast over winter and deteriorates quickly once the protective coating breaks down.
  • Rust and surface coating. Any bare metal or bubbling paintwork is an entry point for moisture. Address it before winter, not after.
  • Drainage around the gate. Pooled water around gate posts accelerates corrosion at the base. Make sure the area drains properly.
  • Hinges, rollers, and locking mechanisms all benefit from a fresh application of lubricant going into winter. Use a product suitable for outdoor metal hardware.

Automated Gates: Pay Extra Attention

Most of the gate work we carry out is on automated systems, and winter is when faults tend to show up. Here is what to check on yours before the cold sets in.

  • Motor performance. Cold weather puts extra load on gate motors. If your motor has been sounding laboured or running slowly, it is worth getting it checked now. A motor that is already under strain will not last the winter.
  • Battery backup. Battery capacity drops in cold temperatures. Test your backup battery before winter and replace it if it is more than two to three years old.
  • Safety sensors and photocells. Sensors can misread in low light or when wet. Clean the lenses and test that the gate stops and reverses correctly before relying on it through the wet months.
  • Control board and wiring. Moisture ingress into the control board is a common winter fault. If your gate is throwing error codes or behaving inconsistently, this is often the cause.
  • Remote and intercom systems. Cold and wet weather can affect signal reliability and intercom clarity. Test everything while you can still do something about it easily.
  • Limit settings. As hinges and tracks wear, gate travel can shift slightly. Limit settings that worked fine in summer may cause the gate to over-travel or under-close once the hardware contracts in cold weather.

If your automated gate has been a bit sluggish or unreliable lately, get it looked at now. Waiting until it fails in the middle of winter is not the move.

When to Call a Professional

Some gate issues are easy enough to sort yourself. Others need a proper set of eyes on them. Get a professional assessment if you notice any of the following.

  • The gate has started dragging, sticking, or sitting uneven
  • There is visible rust or corrosion around the post bases or welds
  • The automated system is throwing errors or behaving inconsistently
  • The motor sounds louder or slower than usual
  • The gate was installed more than five years ago and has never been serviced

A gate that fails mid-winter is not just inconvenient. If it is securing a driveway or property access, it is also a security issue.
